The Old Corn Mill

Millburn Street, Kirkcudbright, DG6 4EB.

In olden times Kirkcudbright and Millburn were two separate places, one a Royal Burgh of distinction and the other a small community built around the corn mill and mill burn. For over 200 years now they have been joined together to form the present town of Kirkcudbright.

In 1947 the old mill was converted into a studio pottery by Tommy Lochhead. He was the first post war studio potter to set up north of the border and was a key influence in the development of Scottish ceramics. Tommy has been called "the godfather of Scottish studio ceramics".  He was joined by his son Wilson Lochhead, who until recently was the potter of the Old Mill Pottery.

Wilson has now converted the mill to include a well designed three-bedroom flat which sleeps up to six adults. The accommodation is equipped to a high, modern standard, but still retains the traditional charm of an older building sympathetically restored, with many handcrafted features.

Outside there is a newly planned garden and patio for the quiet moments beside the running water of the mill lade.

All the town centre amenities to be enjoyed are within a short and easy walking distance of the historic heart of this artists’ town of Kirkcudbright.
